I recently got 2 fat (1001) Sony PSP consoles, one with 3.71 M33 and the other with 3.51 firmware installed. Once I realized I cannot play ISO/CSO images from 3.51, I decided I want to upgrade to more recent firmware version.

Well, this turned out to be quite a trip since 3.51 first needs to be downgraded to 1.50 and then upgraded to 3.52, which then had to be upgraded to 3.52-M33-3 from which I could actually move up to 5.00-M33-6. Peace of cake

This post helped me find out how to create a “magic” memory stick (though I used newer version of PSP Pandora Deluxe) and pandora battery (luckily I’ve had 2 fat PSPs of which one was already ‘customized’), downgrade to firmware 1.50 and restore pandora battery back to a normal one. Once on 1.50, it was pretty easy to follow “regular” update process.

Having done 3.51 to 5.00-M33-6, I realized it would be nice to have the 3.71 upgraded as well, so I tried direct upgrade and found myself locked into a nasty EEEEEEEF update error not being able to boot PSP up at all. This is where “magic” memory stick saved the day and downgraded (semi-?) bricked PSP to 1.50. From that point on the upgrade process was the same as for the first PSP.

Was it worth $20 paying someone else do it? Maybe. Was it fun? Hell yes!

Stitching looks seamless so it is very easy to get expected result within minutes. That’s what iPhone apps should really be – easy to use and as foolproof as possible. It took me a few minutes to create this panorama:

Given the effort I think the result is quite impressive. You can also “easily” (provided you find appropriate tools) drop this into VRML:

If you manage several pfSense boxes you might find it useful to have automated backups easily available.

This pfSense FtpBackup package allows you to set up scheduled (daily, weekly or monthly) backup to your FTP server.

Please have in mind that FTP is NOT secure protocol – your credentials will be sent to server as clear text!

If you need secure backup I suggest you take a look at AutoConfigBackup package or set up encrypted VPN between your pfSense box and ftp backup server.

Installation

Modify /etc/inc/globals.inc of your pfSense box and change the line

“xmlrpcbaseurl” => “www.pfsense.com”
to
“xmlrpcbaseurl” => “www.simpa.ba”.

Go to http://your.pfSense.box/pkg_mgr.php and install FtpBackup package.

You can also grab zipped package here.

Since clean install from .iso image didn’t work for me, here is a quick work-around-how-to for running pfSense on VirtualBox (using existing VMWare image)…

Get pfSense-1.2.2-VM.zip (VMWare image) and pfSense-1.2.2-LiveCD-Installer.iso (from one of existing mirrors).

Extract VM.zip and import VM disk into VirtualBox using File / Virtual Media Manager. Set up your new machine to boot from downloaded LiveCD .iso and use newly added hard disk (imported from VMWare image).

Since you are booting into LiveCD set up your LAN/WAN interfaces and go to shell (option 8). You will have to check disk using fsck /dev/ad0s1a, mount it using mount -o rw /mnt and edit /mnt/etc/fstab to change /dev/da0s1X to /dev/ad0s1X.

Save you changes to fstab and halt the system. Remove LiveCD from you machine settings and you should be good to boot pfSense on VirtualBox.
